2011 SEMA: Chevrolet Camaro COPO concept

At the 2011 SEMA Show, Chevrolet has introduced the Camaro COPO concept, a concept reflecting the past.

Built to comply with the NHRA Stock Eliminator drag racing, the model has a cowl-induction hood, a chromoly roll cage, a pair of bucket seats, a race-spec interior and Auto Meter gauges. There's also a coilover front suspension, a solid rear axle and unique wheels with rear radial racing slicks.

Engine options include: a supercharged 5.3-liter 327 lump or a naturally-aspirated 7.0-liter 427. The engine can be paired to a 2-speed automatic, a 3-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual.

“The COPO Camaro is proof of what a Chevrolet Stock Eliminator entry cold look like”, said GM vice president of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports Jim Campbell. Moreover, he revealed that it will make it past the concept stage, since “Chevrolet intends to homologate the Camaro for sportsman drag racing.”

Mazda MX-5 Going Turbo

Mazda's new MX-5 has been the subject of much speculation over the past year, and Mazda itself has been only too happy to drop a few key details on its only confirmed next-generation sports car.
It is known that Mazda is aiming to return the popular roadster to its roots as a small, lightweight sports car. While the current model gets as low as 1095kg, it's a little more than 150kg heavier than its first ancestor, and noticeably larger.

With the new MX-5, Mazda is expected to reduce its bulk, while producing a more compact and handling-focused body. What's not known is what will power the new car. Reports in recent months have suggested that the Japanese market will get a 1.5 litre SkyActiv engine producing around 95kW, with a 110kW 2.0 litre version destined for the US.

This week, a new report by Britain's Autocar points to an enhanced version of the recently-launched 1.3 litre SkyActiv engine, churning out more power courtesy of a turbocharger.
While past versions of the MX-5 have been offered with turbocharging in various countries - including Australia and Japan - a standard-fit turbo engine in the new model would be a first.
Whatever Mazda decides to slot into the new MX-5's engine bay, the new model should prove a strong rival for the likes of Toyota's new 86 rear-wheel-drive coupe - provided the price is right.

H&R Springs Volkswagen Passat Project 2012

For the 2012 Volkswagen Passat, H&R added its famous Street Performance Coil Over suspension for a lower ride height, then bolted on H&R Sway Bars–28 mm front, 24 mm rear for flatter cornering and better steering response. These sway bars are crafted from a special cold formed and heat-treated 50CrV4 steel alloy, and feature forged, seamless bar ends. Each bar is paired with industry-exclusive sway bar bushings made from a unique urethane/Teflon composite that prevents squeaks, yet requires no grease or other maintenance.

Of course, image is as important as performance, so the Passat was fitted with H&R TRAK+ wheel spacers for wider stance, OZ Ultraleggera HLT 20 x 8 -inch wheels and Michelin 245/35ZR20 Pilot Super Sport tires. BMW 5-Series GT by AC Schnitzer Debuts in Geneva

AC Schnitzer has unveiled their tuning program for the BMW 5-Series GT at the Geneva Motor Show. In an effort to make the ‘wagden’ (half wagon, half sedan) look more appealing, Schnitzer added front and rear spoilers, a ventilated hood, aggressive side skirts, a redesigned rear fascia, chrome exhaust tips, and new wheels (available in a number of different styles, in sizes ranging from 19- to 22-inches). Inside, the company installed aluminum pedals, velour footmats, and a new cover for the i-Drive controller.

On the performance side, the engine in the 530d has been tuned to produce 286 HP (213 kW / 289 PS) – an increase of 41 HP (31 kW / 42 PS). Schnitzer also added a twin rear silencer and a specially tuned sports suspension.

Mazda Gets Loopy With New Capacitor-Based KERS

Mazda has laid claim to developing the first capacitor-based regenerative braking system for a passenger vehicle, dubbed i-ELOOP - intelligent Energy Loop. The technology has shown up in racing cars before (see Toyota's Supra HV-R), but Mazda's project marks its first appearance in a regular passenger car.
The system works like a regular regenerative braking system, but the energy is stored in a capacitor rather than the more common battery arrangement.





The i-ELOOP system is made up of a 12-24V variable voltage alternator, a low-resistance electric double-layer capacitor and a DC/DC converter.
Like most systems, i-ELOOP recovers kinetic energy as the vehicle is decelerating, which the alternator uses to generate electricity that is then sent to the capacitor.
The stored energy is used to power the vehicle's climate control, audio system and other electrical features. The system will also charge the vehicle's battery when necessary.

Mazda says the advantage to using a capacitor its ability to be charged and discharged rapidly, and, compared to batteries, a stronger resistance to deterioration.
The big win for the driver however is that because the system does not use a dedicated motor or battery to operate and is therefore using less power, the vehicle's fuel economy is improved by "approximately" 10 percent.

The system is designed to work alongside Mazda's i-stop idle-stop technology, allowing the engine to remain switched off for longer periods.
Mazda has yet to announce production plans for the technology, but expect i-ELOOP to appear in the next-generation Mazda6 or Mazda3.

Dodge's Detroit Motor Show-Bound Sedan Model will Not be Called the Hornet

We've known for a while now that Dodge plans to introduce a new compact sedan model based on a Fiat platform that will replace the Caliber at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next January.

While the company is keeping most of its cards close to its chest, Reid Biglund, head of the Dodge brand told the Detroit News we'll find out more in the coming weeks including the car's name which he says won't be Hornet as some media outlets suggested. "Hornet will not be the name," said Biglund.

The Dodge boss said he was very excited about the new sedan model that will rival the likes of the Honda Civic, VW Jetta, Chevrolet Cruze, Ford Focus and Hyundai Elantra.

"I've never been more excited about a new car than I am about the new compact. It fills a significant hole in the product portfolio," said Biglund. "So this compact vehicle is going to allow us to compete in 100 percent of the market."

According to sources, the new Dodge sedan will share the same basic floorplan as the Alfa Romeo Giulietta hatchback.

Fiat 500 Alpha Bravo by Tribe Agency

Fat Lace has announced it plans to introduce the Fiat 500 Alpha Bravo at the 2011 SEMA Show.

Built by Tribe Agency, the car has a two-tone exterior (black and army green) and forged alloy wheels wrapped in Falken rubber.

Other features of the 500 Alpha Bravo include Air Lift suspension, an air suspension and a roof rack which reflects on the car’s go-anywhere ability.

Next-gen Viper Viper to feature an 8.7-liter V10

A new report is indicating the 2013 Dodge Viper will be equipped by an 8.7-liter V10 engine.

According to Allpar.com, the new engine is slated to become the largest engine ever used in a Chrysler production car. This engine will likely produce more than 600 hp and 560 lb-ft (760 Nm) of torque.

The 2013 Dodge Viper is expected to go into production in the fall of 2012.

Lexus planning new small hybrid crossover based on the CT 200h, 300h called CX

It seems that Lexus aims to boost its sales and the only solution would be to introduce new models. Due to the fact that consumers need smaller models, an ideal would be a little crossover, based on the popular CT 200h. The idea is not new to us, as in July, we reported that Toyota plans to launch six new hybrids and one of them would be a new Lexus 300h called CX, which will hit showrooms by the end of 2012.

The new crossover will look like a small RX and will make cars like the Audi Q3, BMW X1 or Infiniti EX. Few sources have confirmed that the new car will use a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with Hybrid Synergy Drive used in the Camry Hybrid and the success HS 250h dedicated hybrid sedan.

According to the magazine Auto Motor und Sport of Germany, the small crossover will be designed for the European market, but that does not mean it will not be available in the United States. A hybrid cross would be less perfect complement to the Lexus RX line composed of 45 percent of sales from the U.S. firm has so far this year.

First Lexus LFA arrived in the Philipines

The first Lexus LFA has reached the Philipines. According to report from the representative of Lexus Manila, Philippines is one of three countries in the ASEAN region, which is distributed the Lexus LFA along with Singapore and Brunei.

“It’s not for sale,” said Carlo Chungunco, Lexus Manila’s marketing officer. “We’ve received a lot of offers for it even before it arrived but it’s not for sale.”

We want to remind you that the Lexus LFA is powered by a 4.8-liter V10 engine with 560 hp at 8,700 rpm and 480 Nm of torque at 6,800 rpm. The power is transmitted to the rear wheels through a 6-speed ASG transmission, allowing the supercar to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds and hit a top speed of 325km/h.

The Lexus LFA has a starting price of $375,000.

BMW recalling 32,000 vehicles due to engine fire risk

BMW has announced it will recall a total of five model lines belonging to the 2008-2011 model years due to a fire hazard, including the 5-Series, 5-Series Gran Turismo, 7-Series, X5 and X6 fitted with 8- or 12-cylinder engines.

BMW said the circuit board for the electric auxiliary water pump can overheat and can start a fire. The company found at least 102 cases of pump failures so far, including two engine compartment fires.

The recall is expected to begin this month, with dealers set to replace the auxiliary water pump free of charge. Owners may contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).

Four Ford Mustangs announced for SEMA

Ford has announced it plans to introduce four Mustangs at the 2011 SEMA Show in Las Vegas.

First up, the Forgiato Wheels Mustang features a matte silver paint, a wide body kit and 21-inch front wheels and 22-inch rear wheels. In addition, the car is also equipped with a Vortech supercharger to ensure "the performance matches up to the aggressive appearance."

Next, the Creations n’ Chrome Mustang comes with a red paint, a carbon fiber hood, roof and trunk. Other goodies include 18-inch forged wheels, a Vortech supercharger and a chromoly roll cage.

The MRT Performance Mustang has a ProCharger supercharger, stainless steel sport exhaust system and an H&R coilover suspension. There's also a custom hood, unique paint accents and Sparco racing seats.

Lastly, the H&R Springs Mustang has an Edelbrock supercharger, a flowmaster stainless steel exhaust and Pirelli P Zero tires. The model is also equipped with an adjustable H&R sport suspension.
